LED Backlight with Local Dimming | LED-backlit LCDs

“local dimming” technology to improve the black level and contrast ratios that are weak LCD technology, can achieve 1000000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. When part of the screen goes dark and the other is bright, LCD Backlighting standard (cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL)) must be based on the LCD panel to block the light and create dark areas. The result is less-than-stellar black-level performance that many LCDs have been observed.

Allows local dimming LED backlit sets to produce extremely deep black levels, which are the most important ingredient in HDTV picture quality. The disadvantage, at least in the case of Samsung that we have examined, was “blooming”, where a shiny object on a dark background to show a faint halo of light instead of pure darkness.

One of the advantages LED Backlighting, as described in detail in our guide to technology, include reducing blur for players and sports fans, greater color range for more pictures, improved reliability and a disadvantage of LED backlighting is the consumption of energy, especially with large displays. However, progress in recent years have improved the efficiency to the point that energy efficiency is now an advantage. LED Backlighting offer a long operational life of more than 50,000 hours.
