There are 2 different levels of resolution commonly used in modern HDTVs. The lower one is called “720p”, which means that there are 720 rows of pixels and has a progressive display. The higher resolution is called “1080p” which means 1080 rows of pixels, usually with 1920 pixels per row. Now the current highest HDTV resolution available in the market is 1080p resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.

What is progressive display? In progressive display, 30 photographic images a second on TV.

If signal is primarily standard definition, a 1080p TV will not significantly improve your picture when compared to a 720p TV. The picture quality is fundamentally limited by the source signal (480 lines of vertical resolution). if signal is 1080i format pictures has smoother of 720p and if signal is 1080i, the system will combine the odd and even interlaced frames and display the full signal as 1080p. The 1080p signal is the best of both worlds, more picture information with a progressive format.

If you need to get a size larger than 50 inches of HDTV, you’ll to seriously to consider 1080p because 1080p will seem clearly better. if you not enough budget you will consider some good reason to desidt 720p over 1080p. if you see broadcast and not need larger than 50 inches you may consider to 720p because broadcast signal is 720p and in screen size smaller than 50 inches is very hard to tell difference between 720p and 1080p.
