Breathtaking – Samsung LN46A650 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking – Samsung LN46A650 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

I just got this television a couple days ago. And I have to say that I can hardly find any problems with this television. It delivers an amazing picture without much calibration needed at all. Shipping from Ceva was easy, and fairly quick – only five business days from ordering to delivery.

Pros
+Amazing Picture Quality – Black levels are superb, and rival even some high-end plasmas
+Touch Of Color Bezel adds a nice tint to the television
+Sound Quality better than most standard television speakers – but home theater systems are always better
+Many different settings – input lag completely gone when using game mode

Cons
+Glare can be an issue in a bright room. When its off I can actually use it as a mirror
+The remote wheel is sluggish and unresponsive – But simply pushing the directional keys is an easy alternative
+The bezel seems to be coming off at the edges of the television right out of the box – These can be pushed back into place, but they come back out within seconds.

Overall, I am incredibly happy with this television. It is a great addition to any movie room or fairly large bedroom. The glare is not an issue for me at all, and getting used to the remote is simple. The remote lights up when you grab it, a nice feature not usually present on standard television remotes. I couldn’t find anything that would give me reason to give this television anything but a 5 star rating.

Samsung LN52A650 – Best LCD on market today

Best LCD on market today – Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

I am reviewing this TV compared to the LnT5271F.

52a650 from 9 ft away
Blu-ray- 9.5/10
DVD- 9/10
Sports- 8.5/10
Tv shows- 9/10

5271 from 9 ft away.
Bluray movies- 9.5/10
DVD Movies- 9/10
Sports- 7/10
Tv shows and tv movies- 9/10

So, for the 5271, my viewing experience with blu-ray, DVD, and Tv from 9 ft. is 9/10 or better. There is small issue with flashlights and clouding, but not too noticeable. When I watch sports, my experience drops to 7/10 due to motion blur. Mainly this is NBA. Will it happen with other sports as well? Not as pronounced with the NFL, but it still is not as crisp as I like. MLB is fine, as well as Indy car racing. Tennis has a little blur on the ball. This is because it is tennis. With AMP on, there are serious issues with vapors and Triple Ball effect (where the football is thrown, the ball splits in three.) I need to sit 14 ft away to not see the blur, which is impossible at this house. Yet, at 14 feet, the pq still is amazing and blur is 99% non-existent. I decided to return the set due to this issue. Brightness sells this LCD – Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

Brightness sells this LCD – Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

Some background: I’ve owned a plasma for 5 years. I’ve loathed LCDs ever since I’ve had a plasma. When I went out to look for a new TV, I was focused on getting another plasma. I went to a couple of local stores, and found that this Samsung LCD was just so bright. It was much brighter than any plasma, and the blacks were blacker as well (because of the added contrast). So if you’re worried that this LCD can’t possibly compete with a plasma, let me reassure you of it’s torch brightness, and very BLACK blacks. Read the rest of this entry »

Splendid TV, Long Review – Samsung LN52A750 52-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

Splendid TV, Long Review – Samsung LN52A750 52-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

Pros:
- HD Picture Quality: As I say below, this is my first LCD TV, but I’ve seen many in my years and the PQ is excellent, especially considering the price. The blacks look great, the colors pop, and once I played with the picture settings, it looked even better
- SD Picture Quality: For a 52″ LCD the standard definition picture is very good. While obviously not as good a CRT or a non-HD-LCD, it still is excellent.
- No issues (at least on mine) with clouding, mura, banding, pillaring, etc
- Viewing angle is excellent
- Look of the bezel
- Glossy screen isn’t as reflective as my old CRT
- Lots of picture adjustments
- General connectivity (DNLA, Wiselink, Infolink, etc)

Cons:

- Only one HDMI input that does anything by switching it to PC
- Remote and more importantly the remote UI is poorly conceived. Example: No button for changing AMP settings, and getting to PIP is convoluted.
- A lot of the picture adjustments are limited to certain input types and/or modes
- Bezel is very easy to scratch
- DNLA limits on codecs allowed
- No wireless DNLA
- Auto energy-saving setting needs a little work

Potential benefits/concerns, but not necessarily a pro or a con, IMO:

- Lag

It’s been discussed a lot in this thread. It will bother some, others won’t notice it, and depending on the settings, lag can be extremely minimized. At the end it’s up to the owner.

- Halo

Basically in a dark room a little light emits from the edges of the bezel creating a ‘halo’ over the TV. Some like it, some really dislike it, some don’t even notice it. Decide for yourself. It is rare that I watch anything in pitch black, but when I have it hasn’t bothered me. There is a solution for those that do have an issue with it but like the TV otherwise.

- Touch of Color (TOC)

The red bezel. I like it, my wife likes it and to both us we don’t notice it that much. Again to each their own. The biggest thing with the bezel is how easily it’s surface can get scratched, even with a soft microfiber cloth.

- Short Summary

I really enjoy the TV and everything it offers. The picture quality positive easily outweighs any (and all) of the negatives the TV has, by itself.

Slightly longer review

Preface:

This is my first LCD screen. I’ve waited 2 years to buy one, mainly because I never saw a TV I liked. . . . Saw a review on the 650 and knew the 750 was out. Went to the local store and saw the 750 and really liked it. I waited a few weeks, maybe a month, and finally took the plunge of buying a TV via Amazon.

Ordering and delivery:

Simple.

The order was delayed a few days from the original estimated ship date of the 22nd of May – the day I ordered it – to the 27th, because of some random reason.

TV shipped on the 4th. Amazon’s system had the TV reaching the local CEVA warehouse on the 5th, but Amazon’s system was incorrect. I used CEVA’s system and they were right on with their estimate.

CEVA came to the house, unboxed the TV, placed it on my stand, let me hook up my computer via a DVI>HDMI cable to see if I had any dead pixels and/or glaring issues. None. They left. Very courteous.

Aesthetics:

One of the reasons I bought the 750 over the 650 is because the bezel. I like the squared off bezel of this better then the rounded one of the 650. It wasn’t a big difference, but the price difference of the two models when I got the 750 was negligible.

The downside of the TOC is how easily the bezel can get scratched. The TV has been in my possession for about 3 weeks and it already has 2 scratches on it from just getting wiped down. The bezel seems to collect dust rather quickly, while the screen does not.

Before I bought the TV I had heard how most LCDs have a reflective screen to bring out add more pop, but the reflectiveness was a distraction. I already was coming from a CRT which was pretty reflective, which I didn’t like at all. To my surprise the LN52A750 is less reflective then my CRT and doesn’t distract from my viewing, even during the day.

The ‘halo’ is only visible when it is dark and at 10 feet from the TV, my eyes don’t see it when I’m watching TV. Some might not like it, but I don’t think it is an issue. Go to a store and check it out yourself to see if you like it or not.

The Nuts and Bolts:

- Picture Quality

Wow! In one word.

The picture quality is pretty great. Out of the box the TV’s settings were pretty good, but once I played with the settings, it was even better.

I don’t have a bluray or hi-def DVD player, just an older progressive scan player (not even one of those upconverting ones). But DVDs on that player look great. One day I’ll get a bluray player and I’ll be even happier.

Comcast HD looks wonderful, with basketball games really showing what the TV does. No TBE (triple ball effect) at all.

The standard def, is very good too. Not CRT quality, but better then what I’ve seen out of most, if not all LCDs.

The TV has a lot of picture options that one can play with. There are certain limitations, as Samsung has limited what can be changed on certain inputs/modes, but hopefully that will be corrected in future FW updates. But the abundance of settings options should allow the TV to be set to appease anyone’s eyes.

- On-screen menu and remote UI

The remote is lacking in a lot of ways. Not in the design itself, but the lack of being able to 1-touch things like Auto Motion Plus, Picture-in-Picture, brightness, etc without going into the menus, sometimes delving much deeper into a menu than would make sense.

The menus themselves are fine and easily navigable, but it just takes too many steps to get to certain pieces that should be easier to switch quickly.

Also there is a lack of being able to program certain buttons on the remote (namely the colored buttons) based on what the user needs. In this day and age you would figure having at least a few programmable buttons would be commonplace.

- Connects

The four HDMI’s are nice. What isn’t nice that they all seem to act a tad differently from one another. For example labeling HDMI4 (the one on the side) as a PC does nothing and it seems to act a bit slower to begin with. But HDMI2, when labeled PC, completely eliminates process, hence lag (at least in my tests).

The TV handles the switching fine, but the lack of being able to do the same thing to any of the HDMI’s is a mistake.

This might have more to do with the Movie Mafia – MPAA – but not allowing 5.1 out via optical seems wrong and a tad limiting.

- Sound

To tell you truth, except for my first turn on and off of the TV, I haven’t listened to the internal speakers as everything is going through my receiver, so I can’t say much about it.

- As a computer monitor, streaming, etc

I haven’t tried DNLA yet, as I need to get a wireless bridge, but I have hooked up my laptop to the TV numerous times.

Initially I had hooked it up to HDMI4 and the results were okay. I had trouble playing certain files through that port (namely quicktime ones). But I moved the input to HDMI2 labeled it PC and everything played on the TV just fine. I even removed the PC label and everything played just fine and I had no sound lag either.

If being used just as a monitor, text is clear and legible even from 10 feet away. From up close the text is smooth too.

- Uniformity

First thing I did was test for dead pixels and any obvious defects when CEVA dropped the TV off. Nothing seemed to stand out.

I then tried a lot of different files, movies, etc and nothing wrong stood out again.

And then I ran TVBlink.com’s DVD and only one minor thing stood out, but I think it was source related more then anything else. On the Color Antialiasing test, the circles are to be smooth. Two of my circles (purple and blue) had rolling hills, not steps. It changed when I used my computer’s DVD instead of the standalone one.

Nothing else really stood out.

No pillaring, no clouding/mura, no flashlights, etc. I’m sure there are some irregularities some might notice, but my wife, a few friends, and I haven’t seen anything so that is good enough.

- Gaming/Lag

I only have the Wii. And I’ve noticed no discernible lag when playing games on it in any mode (Game mode, Standard mode, etc) all played the same for me.

I had run tests out of curiosity’s sake more then for any other reasons. Yes, there is lag on this TV, but it is highly dependent on your settings and what you can live with and can’t live with.

There was 0ms lag when I labeled HDMI2 to PC (8 tests – 8 @ 0ms). Game mode gave me a lag of 20ms to 30ms (9 tests – 3 @ 20ms, 6 @ 30ms). Extremely acceptable numbers for an LCD TV of this magnitude and standard mode’s lag with AMP at low was generally clocked between 50ms and 70ms (8 tests 4 @ 50ms, 2 @ 60ms, 2 @ 70ms). A little higher.

The outcomes are based solely on my tests, on my TV, using my equipment. Others might have varying results.

- Audio/Lag

I have not encountered audio lag. As mentioned I have only used the TV speakers once or twice. Sound was in sync then. The rest of the time all sound is run through my receiver and the sync is perfect then too.

I do have my standard cable input into the TV with RCA audio out to the receiver and there is no audio lag there either.

- Halo

Well it’s there, but not a concern on my part. I barely notice it, and when I do it’s because I am looking for it.

- Power on input delay

This actually hadn’t been in my mind until someone else brought it to my attention. If you are switching inputs from the TV Off status, it takes a little bit – actually 13000ms from the time the TV turns on and the input is switched to the appropriate one. Not sure why, but it can be a mild annoyance.

Final Thoughts

I really love the TV. I haven’t hesitated to recommend this TV to anyone I know and one person did buy it and they are extremely happy with their purchase.

Simply Amazing – Samsung LN46A650 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

I just got my TV last Friday and it is everything that I have expected. Unlike the first reviewer on this site, I have not experienced the overheating issues (fingers crossed). If you read his review he did admit the TV was great until that started happening. I just hope I don’t get the same issue.

On to my review:
I spent over a year and a half researching flat panels. I came close to purchasing a Samsung 71F series, but when the salesman told me that new 2008 models were coming out in March, I decided to hold and do more research on those models. I almost purchased the 5 series, but when I found out that it does not have 120hz refresher rate, I decided to research the 6 series and ended buying the 46A650.

I briefly looked at the 7 series, but when I found out the only difference between the two was that the 7 series has a USB port for your MP3 player and 1 GB of cache, I figured it was not for me. I use a dock connected to my receiver when I play my MP3, so to me that was a useless function to fork over extra $$$ for. In addition, I have a PS3 so I don’t really need the 1GB of cache to use the TV as a multimedia center. If you don’t have a PS3 and plan to use your TV to view pictures and play music then the 7 series might be for you.

Pros:
I have the 46″ and I was amazed at how light it was. I was able to pick it up by myself and put it on the stand. The red is absolutely amazing. That’s the favorite thing my Fiancée likes about this TV. Personally, I like the red because it is very subtle and goes great with our family room.

The first night we got it we watched the movie Ratatouille on Blu-Ray Disc. Let me tell you after watching the movie my jaw was sore because I think I spent more than 3/4ths of the movie with my jaw open from the amazing picture. The picture was so clear and concise that we paused it and we were able to even see the little freckles on the mice throughout the movie, including the separate hairs.

As I said earlier I play video games with my PS3, so the 120 hz refresher rate was critical to have. MLB the Show 08 is insane. Just looking at the players faces and even the fans blew me away. My brother has a 46″ inch Vizio 1080P and he recommended it to me saying that there is not much difference from the two so I am better off saving. Let me tell you, he is absolutely wrong. I’ve watched his Vizio and to be honest, it can’t even hold the jockstrap of the 46A650 if it was a male. There is a big difference believe me. The only TV that could probably match-up to this one is the XBR Bravia with 120HZ. That would’ve been what I would have purchased if I had not gotten this one. Up until now, I have absolutely no regrets.

The reason I researched for over a year and a half is because I wanted to get a TV that if something new came on the market a few months later, I would not regret my purchase. I feel very strongly that I will not regret this purchase down the line.

I love having 4 HDMI inputs. This was very important for my purchase also, since I have separate HDMI components. The TV also has an ethernet port, so I have it plugged into the internet. I can get weather, news and stock quotes through it. I’ll admit, I haven’t used it much, but it’s nice to know, I can check the temperature at the touch of the button.

The blacks on this TV are awesome and I can have my curtain open on my huge family room window and I can see the tv clearly during the day. I love the TruSurround feature, since right now I only have two speakers and a subwoofer. This feature is meant to improve the sound quality for people who use two speaker systems. I plan to get a surround sound system eventually, but it’s going to be a while. That’s where this tool comes in handy

The screen is glossy, but I don’t have an issue with it. I like the glossy look and besides, it is meant to make the colors more vibrant and intense. I’ve played with the different viewing modes, but actually, I like standard the best. The movie mode is a little too dark for me and the game one is a little too bright. Standard mode is my desired preference.

The remote is oddly shaped and takes a while to get used to. It also has an ipod like scroll. Some people complain that it is an ugly remote. This is ridiculous; I’m sorry, but I did not purchase this TV for its remote. Anyway, I’m planning on upgrading to an RF Logitech remote this summer anyway.

Cons:

The TV is so good that on the tv stations with weak signals, you can see the weakness of the signal. On some you could see the lines and imperfections, due to having a weak signal. That is only a with a few channels. It’s a negative, but that’s what you get when the picture is very detailed; You will not only get the good qualities, but the bad also, if the signal is not strong. Regardless, that issue will be moot next year when the tv stations will be required to broadcast by digital signal.

Another issue is, that when you turn it on it takes about 3-4 seconds to pick up my digital cable signal from my DVR box. In addition when you switch between sources it takes around the same amount of time to pick up the signal. I’m impatient, which is a negative quality of mine. In our household, it seems like it is an issue only with me, since it does not bother my fiancee at all or any of our friends. Maybe it would not be a con if I was not so stupidly impatient.

Those are really the only two issues I have with the TV and to me they are very minor ones. I just pray I don’t start getting the issues, the first reviewer experienced.

Overall:

I am very happy with my purchase. I am very satisfied and do not feel guilty or have any regrets about making this purchase. Up until now, I feel this TV is worth every penny I paid for it. I’ll be updating my review as I learn more about this TV. I hope my review helped you, even if it was only a tad bit helpful, before making your investment on a flat panel television. Good luck with your search.

Beautiful TV! From the picture to the bezel, just perfect. – Samsung LN52A650

Beautiful TV! From the picture to the bezel, just perfect. – Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

I’ve had this TV since very early March. I’ve watched HD, SD and Blu-Ray and can not find a flaw. The 650 handles motion extremely well to where blurring and other artifacts are vitually non-existant. The AMP is a very cool feature that brings a realism to film making it seem more life-like, or as if it were originally shot on HD Video. Some have said this gives off a “soap opera” effect. I can see that description, but to me it makes film based DVD’s and movies look more like your watching a real-life play, viewing it through a window. It’s a very cool effect!

I understand people’s concern’s with the glossy screens found on plasma and some LCD’s. This screen is slightly less reflective than Samsung’s 71 series but can still be a problem for some. It would be nice if there was an easy solution for this but there’s not. Sony and other makers use a matte type of screen that certainly helps or eliminates the problem but introduces other negatives. I find colors and blacks just don’t “pop” on matte screens and tend to wash out more for off-angle viewing. The 650 has a picture with great depth and color from any angle, greatly adding to the immersion effect.

Much talk has been about the TOC bezel. I think Samsung has hit it out of the park with this. I absolutely love the red. I think it adds just a touch of class. It sets this tv apart from all others(though the picture quality already does this) while still being very subtle and retaining the ability to blend in with any decor. Most people who’ve come to my home do not even notice the red until I point it out. I’m a little tired of every set looking the same with either a piano black bezel or flat black. This is a very welcome change.

I like many other suffered the shut-off issue. As has been mentioned it appears Samsung has fixed the issue with a firmware update. I’ve updated the FW and so far so good. It was annoying but not a huge deal to me. Samsung should be commended for how quickly they addressed the issue. I received several calls from upper level officials that were very concerned with my problem. I’ve never had this level of service from any other manufacturer. Well done Samsung! A side effect of the FW update is that the AMP processing received a boost. Before the FW update I usually had AMP on low at all times and would occasionally put it on High. Now, I still use it at the low setting most times but will put it on Medium occasionaly, and find the High setting a bit much for me. I can put it on High without most of the annoying artifacts people have desribed the 71 series has, which is nice, nut the actual effect is bit much for me.

Overall, this is best the LCD on the market. I can’t see Sony or any of the other manufactures making a better TV this year. They may match it perhaps, but certainly won’t surpass it. For those that were on the fence waiting to buy until the shut-off issue was fixed, your wait is over. Buy with complete confidence and enjoy one of the best TV’s out there!
